This week seemed to start of badly with me screwing up yet another test. thankfully, this wasn't a big one, and I'll probably be able to repair the damage... Today I started the courses extended linear analysis, a voluntary course, and classical physics.
In extended analysis, we discussed how to actually define the natural numbers, what Russel's paradox is, anbd how wondefully absurd logic is when taken to it's extremes.
For example: if P and Q are propositions, the statement "if P then Q" is only strictly false if P happens and not Q (I know I'm probably oversimplyfying, but it's funnier this way...). this means that the only way to actually disprove the statement "If it starts to rain frogs, Norway is going to be invaded" would be it raining frogs without Norway being invaded, otherwise it's true. This might not seem all that funny to you, but engineering physics consist of 85% nerds and/or geeks. pretty much every single one of us were laughing.
Then it was classical physics, which is basically stuff everyone has done before, only slightly more advanced. it's hard to describe why I have such hopes for this course, so I'll have to give yet another example: how you define knowledge/scientific method in different fields:
Natural sciences: You experiment, and form a theory from the results.
Social sciences: You make observations, and form a theory from the results. you do NOT "stage" what you are observing beforehand, as people would get upset if you started a recession "just to see what happens"
Philosophy: You create a theory. Some might try to create a model to describe reality from it, but it's not strictly necessary. Experiments are done on a "I'm bored, what should we do?"-basis.
Religion: These things are true, because someone else told me they were.
All this might not seem all that great to a non-nerd, but trust me, your professor having the same sort of nerdy humour as you really does wonders.
Also, my as of lately absent inspiration seems to have returned, so I'll try to draw something worthy of uploading soon.
